Famous People of Mexico

Who are your favorite famous Mexicans?

From Slim to Selma we attempt to rank the famous people of Mexico, and we'd like your help!

Here are a few famosos to start the list off. We will be adding more every few days, so please stay tuned!

Famosos - The Living

Octavio Paz is generally accepted as Mexico's best contemporary poet and essayist. He was well-deserved in winning a Nobel Prize for Literature 1990.

Carlos Slim Helu is the Mexican so rich that he out-billionaired Bill Gates back in 2006. This year's Forbes List sees him come in as the third richest person in the world. Not bad, I'd say.

Carlos Santana, the Mexican guitarist with 10 GRAMMY Awards. Carlos Santana is so famous that he even has his own line of shoes! No, seriously.

Salma Hayek is the face (& body) of Mexican beauty, on top of being a talented producer (with more than 5 productions on the go just this year) and actor.

Julio Cesar Chavez is considered one of the greatest boxers of all time. He retired in 1996 after losing his professional titles to younger talents.

Oscar De La Hoya was the 'Golden Boy' of professional boxing. He recently announced his retirement on April 14th of 2009.

Mexican Drug Cartels have been giving Mexico a bad named for many years. The madness escalated on Independence Day 2008 when, as fireworks were let off around the country so too were bombs placed by order of drug cartels. We follow the capture of such men here, not to glorify them but to feel confidant that Mexico can bring this internal terrorism under control.

Famosos - legacies of the dead

Emiliano Zapata, the great revolutionary fighter, is an iconic Mexican figure. He is such a powerful symbol of revolution that a group from Chiapas took up his name in becoming 'The Zapatistas' back in the 1990's.

Frida Kahlo the Mexican painter and wife of muralist Diego Rivera. This tiny woman with the big personality has become an icon of Mexican culture. Her paintings are mostly small and exquisite, and the most poignant are autobiographical.

Benito Juarez is possibly the best-loved president that Mexico has ever had. He was the first person of native blood to become president, being of Zapotec descent from Oaxaca. As a politician, he is known for passing laws and reforms that benefited his people.
